Riad Awwad

Never before heard outside Palestine, aside from a few copies not confiscated by the Israeli army, Riad Awwad’s reaction to the First Intifada 1987 was released by Majazz Project last year.

Using custom-built electronic equipment, Riad and his sisters Hanan, Alia, and Nariman made the album in their family living room just one week after the outbreak of the Intifada, collaborating with Mahmoud Darwish on one of the tracks.

300 cassettes were originally sold in the Old City of Jerusalem and across the West Bank. Despite attempts to confiscate all copies they could find, arresting, interrogating, detaining and torturing Riad for several months, the tape was discovered by Mo’min Swaitat during lockdown and now emerges some generations later via the Majazz project.
